The White House publicly criticized Amazon after reports claimed the company planned to show how Trump’s new tariffs increase product prices. Officials called Amazon’s proposed move-a feature displaying each product’s tariff cost-a hostile and political act
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the reported plan “hostile” and “political,” questioning why Amazon did not propose a similar feature during periods of high inflation under President Biden. “If Amazon was truly concerned about transparency. Why didn’t they flag price increases during the peak of inflation?” she asked, implying partisan intent behind the initiative.
Reports suggest that Amazon was considering displaying how much Trump’s proposed 145% tariff on Chinese goods would add to consumer prices. A significant factor is that many of the platform’s products are sourced from China. Critics argue this would draw attention to the fact that tariffs often result in higher costs for American consumers. Rather than foreign exporters, as the Trump administration has claimed.
The White House further accused Amazon of playing politics, pointing to the company’s past compliance with the Chinese government. Leavitt referenced a 2021 Reuters investigation alleging that Amazon restricted certain content on its China platform in response to Beijing’s demands. Suggesting the company was now selectively targeting U.S. political actions, while previously cooperating with foreign censorship.
In response, Amazon denied that such a feature was ever in development for public rollout. “We regularly explore a variety of internal ideas to enhance customer experience. However, this particular feature was never seriously considered, and we have no plans to implement it,” a company spokesperson said.
The controversy underscores the continuing tension between Amazon and the White House. As well as broader political disputes over tariff policy and price transparency. It also revives debate about who ultimately bears the cost of tariffs. A key issue as the 2024 presidential race is intensifying.
